Spend Your Summer with CompassRed

Spend Your Summer with CompassRed

By: Ryan Harrington

This summer, CompassRed will welcome its 4th class of summer interns. This is one of our favorite times of the year. At CompassRed, one of the traits that we value most is a desire to learn. There is no better way to do that - for both us and our interns - than through summer internships.

We believe that internships are a crucial part of the development for any data professional. It’s one thing to work with data in a controlled school setting. It’s a whole other thing to take those learnings and apply them to real world problems.

This summer we have two internships available:

  • Summer Data Science Intern

  • Summer Data Visualization Intern

So, what does a summer interning at CompassRed look like? Just ask our past interns.

“I cherished my internship at CompassRed. The Team, Culture and the Mentorship was really amazing and valuable to me. The CompassRed team was very accommodating, friendly and jolly, hence I was able to perfectly transition into the team in no time.”

“I had the privilege of interning for CompassRed in Summer 2019, where I was an Interaction Design Intern. During my 12 weeks there, I was able to harness D3.js and mine key datasets in R to build a cross-functional data dashboard to help a top client make key decisions and better visualize their data. From team bonding events to our weekly stand ups, the CompassRed team provided me the one-to-one mentorship, inclusivity, and knowledge I needed to better navigate the depths of data science and technology.”

“A summer interning at CompassRed looks like: drinking from a firehose in the best way possible and being willing to dive in to help with anything, from small tasks to big idea brainstorming. You feel like an important contributor to the small, closely-knit team no matter what your experience level is or how old you are. You learn so much, from a variety of technical skills to soft skills like presenting and communicating, and you'll get to work alongside some incredibly intelligent, hardworking, and friendly people.”

Not enough information for you? Here’s a quick FAQ.

What will I be working on during the summer?

At CompassRed we believe that internships should be about learning through experience. For that reason, all of our interns work directly on client projects. You have the opportunity to work with real data solving real challenges for real organizations. In fact, here’s what we believe you should be looking for in your next data science internship - whether that’s with us or somewhere else. For that reason, our interns tend to focus on one main challenge throughout the summer, but they have the opportunity to work on other projects as it makes sense.

What are you looking for in candidates?

We’re looking for a candidate that is on their way to technical mastery while helping to build the culture at CompassRed. The technical skillset is relatively straightforward - you can take a look at the job postings for either role to better understand those.

We deeply value our culture and so demonstrating that you can add to it will differentiate you from other candidates. In no particular order, here are some things that we care about:

  • We’re looking for life-long learners. People who are deeply curious about the world and seek to understand it. We want to learn from you just as much as you’ll learn from us.

  • We love a person who is the good kind of stubborn - the keep-coming-back-to-a-problem-until-you-solve-it kind of stubborn.

  • We desire a person who recognizes implicit bias and offers suggestions on how to expand our horizons.

Can you share any logistics?

We expect our summer interns to be with us for 40 hours per week over the course of 10 weeks. Our interns typically start in June and end in August. We have some flexibility around the start and end dates for our interns and can work with you based upon your school schedule.

Over the course of the pandemic, CompassRed has been mostly virtual. Some people on the team choose to come into the office everyday. Some choose to work remotely each day. Some in-between. While we’ve been able to maintain our culture and productivity working remotely, we value in-person conversations and interactions. We’d like to see you at least once per week, but are happy to work with you. Also, it should go without saying that we follow all appropriate COVID protocols - masks and social distancing are a must in the office.

CompassRed is based on the Wilmington Riverfront at the newly renovated CSC Station - right next door to Wilmington’s Amtrak Station. We’re also right off of I-95 with parking available next to the building. Getting to us by train or by car is extremely convenient.
