Steve’s interest in research began when he managed a homeless shelter in Richmond, Virginia
during the late 1980s. After he automated the shelter’s records of care, he became aware of the
power of data analysis to more effectively deliver services. In 1991 he left this position to pursue
a doctoral degree in social policy, Steve began working in 1997 as a part-time as a trainer and
consultant for a statistical software company named SPSS, which led to full-time position with
IBM after SPSS was acquired by IBM in 2010. During that time he worked with over 250
organizations that used SPSS products, which made him more aware of the value of data
analytics in a wide range of settings. He joined CompassRed, a data analytics firm based in
Wilmington, Delaware, in January of 2017 as their Principal Data Scientist and Manager of
Predictive Analytics.

Concurrent with his work for SPSS, Steve worked as a researcher for the Center for Mental
Health Policy and Services Research at the University of Pennsylvania. He received a Ph.D. in
Social Policy, Planning, and Policy Analysis from Columbia University in 2007.
