There is nothing more exciting to our team at CompassRed than adding new colleagues. Whether we’re bringing in a team of interns or adding some well seasoned colleagues - we know we’re adding people that make us smarter. And making ourselves smarter is one of our key values. Here’s what we’re wondering about when we have a chance to connect with you:
What’s in Your Magazine Rack?
We are certainly interested in understanding your experience and skills - but even more important to us is that you have a passion, an opinion, and a strong desire to move the boat forward (more on the boat below). In the past, when it came to finding out your passion or interest, we used to ask “When you walk by a magazine rack - which magazines do you pick up first - and why?” Sometimes, when interviewing for a visualization experience - we would get the answer “Men’s/Women's Health” or “Time Magazine”. Other times (again focusing on visualization) we would get the response “Communications Arts - and this is why… My favorite article was ___” or “The Economist - I read the data articles and the last one I disagreed with because___”.
Today is a lot easier. You’ve written, you’ve tweeted, you’ve joined Meetups - or followed people on Medium. Your digital fingerprint shows you have an interest in something. The fact that you have an opinion or share the things you read demonstrates your interests - and includes others in your discovery. Even if we don’t agree with your opinion - that’s okay - you have one. And we want you to have one. Here is an example of something one of our colleagues wrote about to share his knowledge.
The best hire I ever made ended their interview saying “Before I go - I want to describe to you what me on your team looks like after the first thirty, the first sixty, and the first ninety days.” I had a clear understanding what to expect. And it didn’t matter if some of it was wrong. We started from a position of aligned expectations. As I explained to this person what life and culture looked like at our company - they explained what they could add and what their expectations were.
Drawing out a 30/60/90 day plan is not always easy. It takes careful thought and application. It’s not solely focused on “I want to learn this” - it is filled with “I want to learn and contribute”. Help us understand how you want to make us better and how we can help you do the same. Your time is precious and we want to help you (and us) make the most of it.
So You're In a Boat...
Imagine you are in a boat - rowing with your team. There are six of you - choppy waters - and you’re in a race. If you’re in the boat rowing the wrong way- you’re going to find out pretty quickly that you’re not supposed to be there. Your other teammates are going to have to work harder just to move forward.
Then imagine you’re in the boat - and someone can swap you out with the same weight and no one knows the difference. You’re not pushing the boat backwards - but you’re not pushing it forward either. You’re just there. That’s not good, nor does it last. You’ll get bored - and your teammates will get bored as well. They are working hard and want to get better (it’s human). They’ll know right away.
Now imagine you’re pushing the boat forward - you become critical. Not only are you pushing the boat to win - you’re inspiring others to work harder. Your passion for being out on the water - for waking up - staying positive, pushing the team. The others will fight for you - they’ll want to learn from you - as you learn from them. You become part of the DNA of the team - and build something you’re proud of.
What We Look For
Everyday - we come together to learn. We want to try new things and make mistakes. We like to push ourselves, our clients, our colleagues and the world of Data Science and Data Analytics. On our boat, we want those that actively shape our culture and have passions that align with ours. We want to see where you want to lead us and do our best to help you get there. We want you to learn alongside of us - and teach others what we’ve learned.
At CompassRed, we look forward to being with you every day - we want you to find where your compass is red - and make our world, your world, and the world a better place. Data and technology is changing everything at a pace that was once unfathomable - but is now possible. We hope you join us and be part of that change.
